Globe speelt Fassbinder's Zeitgeist
Anthon Beeke worked for Total Design from 1976 to 1982. The agency gave him an entirely free hand and enabled him to realize all his ideas, as appears from the posters for the theatre groups Toneelgroep Amsterdam and Zuidelijk Toneel Globe, as well as from other designs.
His style differed from the work of his colleagues at the agency. Beeke’s approach was looser, more intuitive. It contrasted with Total Design’s more functional style. When selecting a typeface Beeke let himself be inspired by the theme. In principle, everything was possible as is demonstrated by the poster Zeitgeist (spirit of the age) on view here.
Beeke used many direct images in his posters, notably daring photographs of faces and the human body. The posters 'Leonce en Lena' (1979) and 'Troïlus en Cressida' (1981) caused a great deal of controversy. Speaking about the posters he designed at the time, Beeke said: “Many bicyclists in Amsterdam stopped to take a better look at my posters.
