- Description
- Van Gogh derived the motif for this courtesan (a high-class prostitute) from the cover of a 'Japanese issue' of the magazine "Paris Illustré". Together with the vivid, contrasting colours, he added a border with aquatic animals and plants borrowed from other Japanese examples. The French word 'grue' (crane) and 'grenouille' (frog) were slang words for women of easy virtue.
