In den zwarten nacht is een mensch aangetreden
In 1889, the suicide of Anna Witsen, sister of the painter Willem Witsen, made a deep impression on poet Herman Gorter. Readers were unaware of the fact that she was the subject of this magnificent poem. Willem Witsen himself, however, did know this; in the original manuscript of the poem, handed to him by Gorter, the poet’s reason for writing it is mentioned explicitly.
