Iets over beschaving (Something on civilization). Delivered on 6 March 1869). Manuscript, 1869
In addition to being very well-known as a writer, Multatuli also enjoyed great fame as a speaker. Between 1862 and 1881, he gave many speeches and lectures. He read from his own works, talked about topical subjects or expounded on one of his own special interests.
He often had no more than a few notes on paper, sometimes the whole reading was made impromptu, but on some occasions, his lectures were more thoroughly prepared. Iets over beschaving had been elaborated in such detail that Willem Paap was able to deliver the lecture again a year after the death of Multatuli, his friend and master.
